The baton, truncheon, nightstick and billy club are some common names for the weapon used for centuries by law enforcement. The club dates back to the 1850s and was first employed by London police in the Victorian Era as a weapon of enforcement to subdue assailants, control riots and a variety of other means and methods in an official capacity. The club was typically made of wood with a fluted handle for gripping. While materials and styles have changed over the years, the baton is still widely used today. Offered is a black-colored wooden baton with edged grip and silver metal ball end that was gifted by Denver police to Elvis in the mid ’70s. As evidence by the wear and marks, this baton has seen some use and was part of a larger gift to Elvis as detailed in the letter from Sandy Miller that is included in this lot. The letter, signed by Sandy Miller Silverberg as “Former executrix of Vernon Presley’s Estate” and dated May 25, 1996, states, “This black, Policeman’s billy club was given to Elvis Presley in February of 1976. It was given to Elvis by Denver, Colorado Police officers, Ron Pietrafeso and Jerry Kennedy. On the same occasion, Elvis received a full Policeman’s uniform, badge and other policeman paraphernalia. Elvis spent time with both officers at Graceland and in Denver and Vail, Colorado. After Vernon Presley’s death in 1979, I inherited his personal effects. This included many of Elvis’ personal items that Vernon received either from Elvis or the Estate. This billy club was amongst Vernon’s personal belongings.” Elvis’ passion and admiration for law enforcement helped him to develop a special bond with police across the nation, many of whom gifted Elvis with official police-issue gear such as the offered truncheon. The baton measures 24 inches (60.96 cm) in length and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The club is slightly curved with a metal ball at the end of the handle. This sturdy club has seen plenty of use as evidenced by the wear, scratches and scuffs overall. Otherwise in very good condition.
