From The Oleander Collection

Elvis took Ginger Alden, her sisters and a large entourage of thirty, including Dr. Nick and his family, to Hawaii in March of 1977 on what would be his last vacation to his favorite islands. In typical Elvis fashion, he took a group on a little shopping excursion during which Elvis purchased trinkets that caught his fancy. One such ornament was a mother-of-pearl inlaid crucifix. Mother-of-pearl, the shining layer that forms inside a shell, is commonly used in island jewelry. It was affixed to a wooden back originally atop an ornate base on the offered example. This stunning crucifix was purchased by Elvis for himself and later given to Ginger. Ginger recounts the circumstances of the gift in her accompanying letter, signed in her signature purple ink, that reads, “Elvis chose this crucifix and purchased it for himself while on a shopping trip with me, Ginger Alden, during the last vacation that he took to Hawaii in March of 1977 which was unfortunately cut short due to an eye infection. Elvis carried this crucifix back to Memphis with him and while preparing to disembark his airplane the Lisa Marie, he dropped the crucifix and the attached base broke off. Elvis later gave it to me at Graceland. Sincerely, Ginger Alden.” Elvis’ purchase of this bauble is also mentioned in chapter 19 of Ginger Alden’s book Elvis & Ginger. In this chapter, Ginger not only describes details of the vacation, but recalls the moment when she witnessed Elvis signing his will just hours before departure. The will ensured that Vernon, Grandma and Lisa Marie would be well cared for and perhaps with this fresh on his mind, the symbolism of the crucifix was especially alluring to him at that time. It should be noted that an identical but larger cross was sold from the Dr. Nick Collection, given to him while on that same Hawaiian vacation—it was common for Elvis to buy items in multiples when he found them appealing. The cross measures 10 3/4 by 6 inches (27.30 x 15.24 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

With the obvious exception of the missing base, and some minor loss at the top and side, the cross presents with few other defects. Excellent condition.
