Many young men of Elvis’ generation attempted to mimic his fashionable style, yet Elvis was always one step ahead in his fashion forward choices and the offered hat is no exception. The offered brown velour fedora is made by Beaverbrook, Ltd. as stamped in the interior seam along with the Beaverbrook crest appearing on the inside crown. The stylish fedora, with circular band trim and round gold-metal colored accent disc, comes with a copy of Mike Moon’s Certificate listing the hat as the item he purchased from Sonny West on October 23, 1981. The hat is listed as “One brown velour hat bought by Elvis at Lansky Brothers in Memphis. Having recently seen the movie ‘Across 110th Street’ with the word ‘SHAZAM’ in it. Elvis used that word to describe this type of hat.” Also included is a letter from “EP Archives” of Las Vegas, Nevada, indicating that the offered hat was among the items purchased from the Mike Moon collection in 2018 and stating in part, “This brown velour superfly hat was purchased by Elvis Presley at Lansky Brothers in Memphis. This brown hat was worn by Elvis during the early to mid 70s before giving it to Memphis Mafia member, Sonny West.” One could certainly attribute a kind of bad-boy coolness to the rough and tumble characters of the 1972 film Across 110th Street wearing this style of snazzy fedora. A movie about the clashing of gangsters, mafia and the police over a robbery gone wrong… one group tougher than the next. That sleek, tough look that is exemplified in this “superfly” chapeau is likely why Elvis chose it and referred to it as “Shazam.” Elvis so loved the film that he was able to quote almost every line from memory. As with so many of Elvis’ fashions and jewelry, this cool cap was also passed along to his own Memphis Mafia member Sonny West before finding its way into the collection of Mike Moon. This slick fedora measures 14 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches (36.83 x 34.29 cm) in diameter and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The hat exhibits staining on the interior lining, possibly from water damage. Excellent condition.
