In 1970 Elvis had donated $5,500 to help outfit a gymnasium for the Denver police officers with whom he was very friendly. In return, Denver Police Chief George Seaton gave Elvis an official badge in front of press at a well-documented event. Two years later in 1972, Art Dill succeeded Seaton as Police Chief and gave Elvis another badge along with a captain’s uniform. Elvis tried to gift Dill with a Cadillac but he refused, yet later accepted a vintage Colt 45 firearm. Elvis took a liking to the Denver PD during this period in the 1970s, often showering officers with jewelry and other expensive gifts. This became somewhat troublesome years later, and several police authorities were made to answer for what were determined to be gifts that should not have been accepted. The offered Denver Police Department lieutenant’s badge with “EAP” initialed at the bottom is still in its original wallet and comes with a letter from Joe Esposito that states, “I, Joe Esposito, Road Manager and Friend of Elvis Presley, do hereby attest to the authenticity of the item(s) listed below / Elvis Presley Denver Police Badge / This Lieutenant Police Badge was presented to Elvis by the Denver Police Department.” The badge remains in its thick leather case with interior green suede panel to cover the badge, which is pinned to the back of the case with a pin back and secured into place using a locking closure. Elvis collected law enforcement badges and treasured every one, and this likely held very fond memories of his time spent with and being honored by the Denver Police Department. The case measures 4 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches (11.43 x 8.89 cm), the badge measures 3 1/4 by 2 1/4 inches (8.25 x 5.71 cm) and the set is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The badge is in excellent condition overall with the blue enameling on the "P" in "Police" slightly worn. The initial plaque has patinated with age. The leather case is well-used and exhibits areas of heavy wear and patina. The interior identification pocket has an adhesive residue visible.
