The boater hat was more formal summer headwear for men in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Typically made of straw, it was popular among boaters and sailors, hence the name, although it was also used by barbershop quartets and sometimes as part of a school uniform. The fashion was adopted by political rallies in the states who often utilized a less expensive foam version to relay their message. What better way to promote Elvis’ Summer Festivals than with this handsome summer headgear? The Colonel, always keen to exploit any cost-effective marketing method that could be used for multiple events, venues and dates, adopted the Styrofoam hat for use at Elvis’ performances and simply swapped the colored bands to advertise the location, event and record label. In addition to his many appearances in Las Vegas, Elvis performed five times at Del Webb’s Sahara Tahoe Hotel and Casino from 1971 through 1976. The shows were beloved by fans and Elvis alike for their more intimate atmosphere. Offered is an example of a styrofoam hat from the Summer Festival at the Saraha Tahoe, a rare version given the small number of shows Elvis performed at this venue. The light pink band on this scarce example reads “Elvis Summer Festival / Sahara Tahoe RCA.” The hat measures 6 1/2 by 8 inches (16.51 x 20.32 cm) on the interior and 4 inches (10.16 cm) in height and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The original adhesive has bled through slightly, but the hat is intact, with its original inside rubber bands. Near Mint condition.
