In contrast to his mega-star status, Elvis was passionately spiritual and eagerly read books on religious and philosophical subjects. The Impersonal Life was one of his favorites and he often gave copies of this title as gifts. In keeping with this devotion, Elvis would frequently wear a kaftan, a robe worn in various religious cultures and by royalty for thousands of years. In a gesture befitting a King, Elvis gifted the offered kaftan robe to his friend Patti Parry. Patti Parry was English and moved to the U.S. when she was just 10 years old. In 1960, at the tender age of 17, she met Elvis for the first time. Patti, who ran into Elvis while on Santa Monica Boulevard, was in beauty school at the time with Larry Geller. When she met Elvis, the two immediately hit it off and she became one of the few women to spend time with the entourage in Los Angeles. Elvis treated her like a little sister and would often introduce her as part of the family. Theirs was a special brother-and-sister relationship and as with close friends and family, Elvis lavished Patti with gifts, including the offered kaftan robe. This dazzling dark blue kaftan with beaded and bejeweled stylized flowers and vines along the front panels and beaded embroidery along all edges, is lined in blue satin-like material. It comes with a letter from Patti that states:

I Patti Parry was the only “female member” of Elvis’ Memphis mafia. I was Elvis’ friend and he often referred to me as “little sister.” I often styled his hair as his hairdresser. Styling it for the Aloha from Hawaii special, but more importantly I was lucky enough to be considered his friend. This long dark blue velvet kaftan with sequins and faux pearl beading belonged to and was worn by Elvis. Elvis had a number of these in different colors and designs. One night when Elvis was in L.A. I was at his house styling his hair. Elvis put this kaftan on and gave me another one. I joked with him and told him I liked his better. He laughed, took it off and then gave it to me. I’ve treasured it since that time.

The letter is signed “Patti Parry T.L.C.” The gorgeous kaftan, measuring 56 inches (142.24 cm) in length and 16 inches (40.64 cm) in width from inner shoulder to shoulder, is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The kaftan presents with minimal wear to the ornate beading and exterior fabric. There are several areas of staining, perhaps from sweat, near the lining of the arm seams. Near Mint condition.
