On September 26, 1956, Elvis made his triumphant return to Tupelo, Mississippi to perform a pair of shows in his hometown. Having first performed there at the age of ten, Elvis once again took the stage for a legendary appearance at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair & Dairy Show which captured his meteoric rise. Elvis’ fame was spreading rapidly across the nation and his hometown could not have been prouder. Elvis returned to a huge banner that read “Tupelo Welcomes Elvis Presley Home” and Tupelo mayor James Ballard presented Elvis with a guitar-shaped key to the city, while Mississippi governor J.P. Coleman read a proclamation honoring Elvis. By this time in 1956, Elvis’ first film was just months away from release and he already had several huge hits on his new record label, RCA, including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.” Offered are nine (9) early black-and-white news service photos. Five have handwritten identifications from September 1956 on the reverse. One photo has a handwritten notation on the reverse identifying the fan with Elvis as 14-year-old Judy Hopper from Alamo, Texas 1956 and another confirming that the image is of the Presley home in Tupelo. All photos were taken by press photographer couple Jean and Roy Cummings, and five bear a Jean Cummings stamp. By merit of the back stampings, which include zip codes in the address (not used until 1964), the photos were printed in a later period. This fantastic group of images depicting a time when Elvis was at the very cusp of superstardom all measure approximately 8 by 10 inches (20.32 x 25.4 cm), with a few trimmed slightly smaller. This collection of photos is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The photos present with expected distresses related to news service photos, including edge wear, creasing, chipping and some small areas of paper loss. Excellent condition overall.
