The fourteen negatives capture Elvis Presley being interviewed prior to and on stage during his Friday, April 5, 1957, concert at The Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Elvis performed on a bill that included a number of other artists that night, including Rex Marlowe, June Day, Jimmy James, Frank Connors and Frankie Trent. Nine of the photos capture Elvis in his 1950's performing prime, on stage with Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana and Bill Black, as well as the Jordanaires. Three of the photos are of Elvis answering reporters' questions prior to the show, and the final two photos capture the front row of the crowd in attendance that night in Philadelphia. Two different 4x5 film formats were employed that day, both manufactured by Kodak, including the stiffer 4x5 sheet film and 4x5 film pack, a type of roll film that would have held as many as 12 exposures. The offered group has 4 sheet film negatives and 10 film pack negatives.

Though only 15 years old at the time, John Hilfirty was a freelance photographer with a professional grade camera who often did assignments for local newspapers. On April 5, 1957, John was assigned to shoot the Elvis Presley concert--the assignment came most likely from the Philadelphia Daily News. The paper ended up not wanting the photos for the story, so John kept them and filed them away. It was much more common in that period to run most stories with no photographs.

The negatives are accompanied by a period 4x5 paper envelope, now in two pieces, with writing on the front that reads, very lightly in pencil "Presley" and in pen "3 Elvis in Dr. Rm / 9 El. & Jord. on st. / 2 Crowd Shots (1 good)." At the bottom the writing continues "April 1957 @ Arena 46th & Market STS Phila, PA." The negatives all measure 5 by 4 inches (12.7 x 10.16 cm) and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The negatives all present with some sort of water or heat damage, but can be scanned with very positive results. Very Good condition with some better.
