Widely respected for his service in the Armed Forces, Elvis was enlisted as a private in the Army and was stationed in Germany during his tour. Despite all the smiles we see in publicity photos of Elvis in uniform and the attention paid to the celebrated private, he was treated much like any other enlisted man. One might not be able to tell it from the expressions on Elvis’ face in this amazing collection of photographs captured by the press corps throughout his time in the Army as Elvis performed his civic duty, serving his country in an honest and honorable fashion. The group of incredible early photos captures many of the key moments in Elvis’ military career, including embarking for basic training at Fort Hood with then-girlfriend Anita Wood; home on furlough from basic training; the famous Army haircut image; Elvis in uniform with his parents; carrying his gear and executing his duties; in the Army hospital; during maneuvers; with Vernon after Gladys’ passing; and always being gracious with fans.

There are eight wire photos, photos that were literally sent over wire transfer machines from a news photo service to a publication such as a newspaper. There are nine original news service photos with United Press International stampings on the reverse, one photo with “Official U.S. Army Photograph” stamped on the reverse and several others from various sources. This collection captures nearly every phase of Elvis’ service while he was out of the public eye serving his nation as an ordinary enlisted officer. A truly unique and timely grouping providing a glimpse into the period when this mega-star served the United States of America to protect the freedoms of its citizens. The photos range in size from 9 by 7 inches (22.86 x 17.78 cm) to 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm) with several smaller. The collection is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The photos present with expected wear related to being used in the production of newspapers and or magazines, including scuffing, scratches, creasing and toning. Excellent condition overall.
