Elvis loved watching professional football and was known to view three games simultaneously on his televisions in Graceland. He knew the players, their numbers and teams and when he wasn’t spectating, he enjoyed tossing the football around himself. In the early 1960s he ranked football just beneath music as his favorite pastime. Being such an avid fan, Elvis was keen on the World Football League’s Memphis team, the Memphis Southmen, who were informally referred to as the “Memphis Grizzlies.” The WFL was an American league that played in 1974 and 1975. The “Grizzlies,” whose home field was the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, were owned by John Bassett, who signed three NFL players from the Miami Dolphins and hired head coach John McVay. In the opening game of the 1974 season in Detroit, the Grizzlies played to a crowd of over 30,000 fans, including Elvis. Offered is a 1975 “Memphis NFL” pin given to Elvis by John Bassett during this pivotal period when he was attempting to obtain an NFL franchise in Memphis. Despite having such a well-known fan and being one of the better supported franchises in the WFL, when the league folded, the Grizzlies’ appeal to join the NFL was rejected and several of the players joined the New York Giants. This rare relic from that brief moment in WFL history comes with a copy of a two-page letter dated 7-24-1983 in which Marty Lacker lists several items, with this pin being documented on the list as “7. NFL Pin – Elvis’ Memphis NFL pin given to him during NFL drive in Memphis in 1975. Given to him by John Bassett.” The pin also comes with an additional letter from “EP Archives” of Las Vegas, Nevada which states that the pin was part of the Mike Moon collection and acquired from that collection in the summer of 2018. This unique pin with its patriotic color scheme, from a notable period in WFL history, measures 3/4 by 5/8 inches (1.91 x 1.59 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The pin presents with few if any defects. Near Mint condition.
