Colonel Parker called it the “first entertainment special to be broadcast live around the world.” Elvis’ “Aloha from Hawaii” concert was broadcast via satellite on January 14, 1973, from the Honolulu International Center, and it’s believed that over 1 billion fans viewed the concert worldwide. Fans from around the globe watched as the singing phenomenon took the stage and said “Aloha” to the world. The famed concert aired via satellite in over 40 countries in Europe and Asia (airing at a later date in the U.S.) and was the most expensive entertainment special of its time, costing approximately $2.5 million to produce. The offered original oil canvas banner was created to hang at the Honolulu International Center Arena for both the rehearsal and live television performance of the most widely viewed concert of the time. Similar banners can be seen in the Aloha from Hawaii concert DVD at approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The heraldic-shaped canvas oilcloth banner with its bright blue background and upper corner grommets comes with a letter, dated July 8, 2016, from Paula Stallard who recounts in part, “This banner was acquired at the Honolulu International Center (HIC) Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii after his live performance on January 14, 1973 and has been in my possession ever since” and a copy of a photo from the concert depicting similar banners. Ms. Stallard is the same woman who acquired the stage-worn concert scarf from Elvis during the same concert that is offered in the previous lot. The banner measures 39 1/2 by 25 1/2 inches (100.33 x 64.77 cm), is stored rolled and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The banner shows moderate to heavy wear with some chipping away of ink on the surface. Excellent condition.
