February 23, 1970 was the closing night of Elvis’ four-week winter engagement at the International hotel. This particular concert that evening ran until 3 a.m. and is arguably one of Elvis’ finest performances. This successful engagement resulted in the release of the LP On Stage—February 1970. In 2006, Graceland Records released a CD entitled Elvis: Closing Night, Las Vegas, February 23, 1970 that contains tracks recorded live at the International hotel that night. It includes “Long Tall Sally,” “Hound Dog, “Love Me Tender,” “C. C. Rider,” and 13 more tracks, one of special note being “Blueberry Hill,” which was an impromptu medley on the piano at the end of that late night live performance. The cover image for this release is the same as on this period poster: a close-up headshot of Elvis in the white brocade jumpsuit singing into a microphone with a ring finger full of bling. This period black-and-white poster is inscribed on the front in black ink, “To Sandy and Jerry ‘He’s her husband’ with Friendship and Love E.P.” The poster also contains its original facsimile “Thanks Elvis” signature in the lower left.

This poster was inscribed to Jerry Schilling, who met Elvis in 1954. The two became close friends and Jerry joined the ranks of Elvis’ inner circle, which was known fondly as the “Memphis Mafia.” Elvis valued Jerry’s friendship and Jerry was always there for Elvis while venturing to have his own career. Jerry was successful in this endeavor; he managed The Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis for a spell and later managed the musical career of Lisa Marie. Jerry met his wife Sandy and they married just six weeks prior to Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding. This personally inscribed poster to an important member of the Memphis Mafia measures 28 by 22 inches (71.12 x 55.88 cm) and has been mounted on heavy cardboard with some type of shellac. An effort has been made to remove some of the coating, and this process did not damage the inscription at all, as it remains very readable. The poster is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The poster has suffered from the mounting to the cardboard, and the later stripping of the coating, but surprisingly remains in very presentable condition. There is quite a bit of edge damage and paper loss. Very Good condition overall.
