The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s main goal was to raise scholarship funds for needy boys and girls. Louis Pearce helped move the Rodeo to the Astrodome and booked Elvis for a three-night engagement in 1970. Of all the celebrities that performed at the rodeo concert series, Elvis made the biggest impression. Louis Pearce of course had to go through tough negotiations with the Colonel to get Elvis booked, and although Pearce explained to the Colonel that this was an event for which they volunteered and did not make a profit on, the Colonel responded, “Well, so we can get this thing off on the right foot: I won’t give anybody a stick of gum. Now y’all start talking.” Elvis was polite and courteous during the negotiations. Offered is a 1970 “Official” badge from that early show. Elvis returned to the Houston Livestock Show several times, the last in 1974, and also offered is a “Press” badge from this last year of Elvis appearances. The badges show the evolution of the brand logo, with only the “H” in cowboy boots and a “Tex” cowboy hat remaining unchanged. The “Official” badge is a simple rectangular design with the back stamping “Star Eng / Houston Tex,” while the “Press” badge from four years later is more intricate, with a red “Houston” sash across a globe and a back stamping of a star next to an “E.” Both include the year of issue on the front. The 1970 “Official” badge measures 1 1/4 by 1 3/4 inches (3.17 x 4.44 cm), the 1974 “Press” badge measures 2 by 2 inches (5.08 x 5.08 cm) and the pair are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Both badges present with minimal wear. Excellent to Mint condition.
1970 “Official” and 1974 “Press” Badges from Elvis Presley’s Concerts at the Houston Astrodome Livestock Show and Rodeo
