This masculine wooden box with top inset detail of ducks in flight and corner circular carvings was used by Elvis to house his personal effects like cigars, medication and jewelry while traveling. The popularity of wooden boxes as an accessory for men stemmed from the inventive adaptive reuse of cigar boxes. In 1863 a law was passed in America in an attempt to regulate the manufacture and sale of cigars that made the packaging of cigars in a box mandatory. The materials for the boxes was also limited to glass or wood. Given that a set number of cigars could be housed in a given box, this made taxation simpler as well. Once the stogies were enjoyed, inventive uses for the boxes were often conceived, from a simple storage container to a primitive guitar. Luckily, a young Elvis had no need for a cigar box guitar, as the world benefited from his musical talents on a real one. The offered handsome decorative box comes with a copy of a Billy Smith inventory list mentioning this box and a letter from Etienne Heyndrickx that states in part, “This wooden box with ducks in satin was used to carry gum, cigars and different little items for Elvis. Mostly when he went to the Memphian Theatre to watch movies at night. … In the middle of the top, 10,5 x 7,5 cm, is a creme satin field with 2 ducks embroidered. In the book ‘Graceland: Living Legacy of Elvis Presley’ on page 47, Marty Lacker is talking about these kind of boxes, calling them ‘Elvis cigar boxes’: ‘these were little storage cabinets and one had to be in the den, one in Elvis’ car and one available during movie nights’. This box was given to me by Billy Smith in 1985…” A copy of the page from the book mentioned in this letter is also included, in which typical contents that Elvis would keep in the box are mentioned, like “wood tippped cigars - El Producto Diamond Tips, plain cigars - El Producto Atlas, tube of Blistex, Tareyton cigarettes (2 packs), small bottle of Dristan, small bottle of Super Anahist, one card package of Contac, one tine of antibiotic Sucrets (red box), small bottles of eyedrops, two emery boards and fingernail file and cleaner, matches (4 to 5 books)” to name a few. This sporting wooden box, a virtual traveling medicinal hygiene container, measures 5 by 6 3/4 by 2 3/4 inches (12.7 x 17.15 x 6.99 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The box exhibits signs of use, with some minor scuffs and scratches. Excellent to Mint condition.
