American Express began issuing credit cards with the iconic Centurion design in 1958, yet much earlier, in 1891, the company had pioneered the creation of traveler’s checks, which tended to be used to safeguard funds while traveling, enabling the traveler to carry universally recognized checks rather than cash. While in Germany, this versatile option came in handy for Elvis and his family. The offered American Express Company check from Bad Nauheim, Germany was stamped to “Esso-Station / Karl Metz / Bad Nauheim” for “DM 25.60” by Vernon Presley and signed by him on the front and endorsed on the reverse with an additional Esso-Station Karl Metz stamp and the signature of Karl Metz. The check, number 267273, has a black stamp indicating that payment was made on April 22, 1959, a similar date as completed in ink on the check. While the requesting currency is in the denomination of Deutsche Marks, interestingly there is a printed note on the left side of the check to indicate that “If drawn in dollars and presented in the United States, this check is payable at par through the New York clearing house at the American Express Company, Inc., New York Agency, New York, New York” with an additional printed note along the bottom to indicate, “If drawn in DM, this check may be negotiated only in Western Germany & the Western sectors of Berlin.” This convenient payment method was used often by Vernon Presley during their stay in Germany. This check, used to cover a petrol station expense of approximately $6.12 USD at the time, provides a very rare and unusual glimpse into the daily financial dealings of Vernon while living in Germany during his son’s service. The check measures 4 1/8 by 8 1/4 inches (10.47 x 20.95 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The check is in excellent condition overall with a vertical center fold line, minor paper loss to the left side which is likely original from a time when the check was torn from the ledger, slight soiling on the reverse and three punch holes along the bottom edge.
