American Express began issuing credit cards with the iconic Centurion design in 1958, yet much earlier, in 1891, the company had pioneered the creation of traveler’s checks, which tended to be used to safeguard funds while traveling, enabling the traveler to carry universally recognized checks rather than cash. While in Germany, this versatile option came in handy for Elvis and his family. The offered American Express Company check from Bad Nauheim, Germany was written to “Cash” for “$150.00” by Vernon Presley and signed by him on the front and again endorsed by him on the reverse. The check, number 265340, has a red stamp indicating that payment was made on April 14, 1959, the same date as completed in ink on the check. Although requesting the denomination in U.S. currency, interestingly there is a printed note on the check to indicate that “If drawn in DM, this check may be negotiated only in Western Germany & the Western sectors of Berlin.” This convenient method was used often by Vernon Presley as indicated in the accompanying copy of the American Express Company tally for his account, which lists several earlier checks written against the credit on their account. This check and copy of the account register provide a very rare and unusual glimpse into the financial dealings of Vernon while living in Germany during his son’s service. The accounting page measures 11 by 8 1/2 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm), the check measures 3 1/4 by 7 1/2 inches (8.26 x 19.05 cm) and the pair are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The check is in excellent condition overall with strong, ballpoint ink Vernon signature on the reverse and bold ink signature on the front. The copy of the accounting is in excellent condition overall.
