On September 22, 1958, Elvis set sail in his Army uniform for his 18-month Army assignment in Germany. Having just risen to superstardom, this impending, lengthy absence created a fear that the star’s popularity would fade during his time away. To keep Elvis fresh in the minds of fans and the American public, the Colonel and RCA set in motion a campaign to keep Elvis relevant and beloved. This venture began with the almost immediate November release of Elvis Sails, which cleverly contained interviews and sound effects from Elvis’ departure, and the 45 Extended Play record (EPA-4325) was issued on November 18, 1958. Eventually Elvis Sails was issued in Japan under the "Victor" label as EP-1348. The Japanese issue offered here, complete with its as-issued, sealed dust jacket and interview transcript insert in English and Japanese, is an extremely rare Elvis record in its own right. What distinguishes this lot is inclusion of the rarity's rarity: a white label promotional 45 RPM "not for sale" copy of the EP. Both records present with the distinct center hole cut seen on Japanese records of the era. Each record's Side 1 contains three interview excerpts, and Side 2 contains Elvis' songs "Peace in the Valley" and "Take My Hand, Precious Lord." To find a high-condition Japanese EP, with all pieces intact and unsullied, is special. To find the promotional version as well is simply unheard of. Each record 45 measures 7 inches (17.8 cm) in diameter and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Both records present in VG+ condition, with the promotional version better. The insert and dust jacket present with only mild staining. The "Victor Record 45 RPM" embossed plastic covering is only mildly toned and intact.
