To promote Elvis Presley’s first film, Love Me Tender, 20th Century Fox spared no expense, as evidenced by the offered movie theater lobby standee. At nearly six feet tall, Elvis and his guitar must have dominated any waiting area they graced in 1956. The display reads “ELVIS PRESLEY as he appears in his first motion picture LOVE ME TENDER from 20th Century Fox in Cinemascope. These displays were moved from theater to theater as the film made its way through its run, which was extensive for the smash hit. Consequently, an extremely small number of these standees survived, and no other that we’ve seen is complete with its original standee architecture on the reverse. This amazing artifact would be the centerpiece of any collection. The film was retitled from The Reno Brothers late in production to capitalize on the raging success of Elvis’ single “Love Me Tender,” which sold an unprecedented one million copies prior to its release. Reworked slightly for the young singer, Love Me Tender was a fairly straightforward Western tale with some nice plot twists and some songs thrown in for good measure. The film was premiered by Twentieth Century Fox on November 15, 1956, in New York City and on November 20 in Memphis. Elvis attended the Memphis showing with his mother Gladys. When Gladys cried at the death of her son’s character at the end of the movie, Elvis vowed never again to take a role in which his character perished. It may have warmed her heart just a bit to see her son in all his glory as she passed one of these displays in the lobby! The standee measures 66 by 29 inches (167.4 x 73.66 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

This standee presents with even toning and several areas of distress along the edges. The original standee structure on the reverse has been reinforced with wooden planks vertically and horizontally. These wooden pieces have been nailed to the display, but the nails are quite unobtrusive to the display's visual impact. Very Good condition overall.
