More than 90 years ago on November 28, 1925, Nashville radio station WSM introduced a new show called the WSM Barn Dance which featured fiddle and harmonic players and hoe down bands paving the way for the popularity of country music. As the popularity of the show grew, the program evolved to include bluegrass, American folk, gospel, comedy skits and even some rock ’n’ roll but has always maintained its roots in country music. With the expansion and growth, the show was rebranded as the Grand Ole Opry, and is today the longest running radio broadcast in U.S. history and the program that put Nashville on the map as the home of country music.

Elvis performed at the Grand Ole Opry on October 2, 1954 to a cool reception, after which Sam Phillips booked Elvis on the competing program The Louisiana Hayride. Elvis first performed live on The Louisiana Hayride on October 16, 1954 and it was the success of his appearance on The Louisiana Hayride that launched his overwhelmingly successful career.

Offered is a souvenir program from the Grand Ole Opry that showcases the performers and includes Elvis with a headshot and description that states, “On Sun label, handsome, young Elvis Presley sky-rocketed to fame with his country-western songs with a rhythm and blues flavor. Two of his unique numbers which have hot Billboard magazine’s Popularity charts are ‘Baby, Let’s Play House’ and ‘I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone.’” Both of these Elvis tunes were released in April of 1955. During his relentless touring schedule in 1955, Elvis would appear numerous times on the bill at Grand Ole Opry-sponsored concerts—the offered program would have been available for sale at these events. This 1955 black-and-white program with front and back covers accented in bright blue measures 11 by 8 1/2 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The program is in excellent condition overall with minor edge wear, creasing in the lower right corner and slight discoloration from age.
