On August 6, 1955 in Batesville, Arkansas, a young rising star named Elvis performs at the 11th Annual White River Water Carnival in River Stadium. Mayor Roy Row invites guests to his “City of Hospitality” in his opening letter printed in the program for the events by saying, “Again it’s water carnival time in Batesville and a hearty welcome is extended to all the visitors who will be here to attend the eleventh event on August 4, 5, and 6.” He continues, “The Young Business Men’s Association, official sponsor of the White River Water Carnival, in cooperation with all the local civic clubs, has done a great deal of work to provide a program of varied and colorful events for your entertainment.” And boy was his description accurate, since the wide variety of events included a golf tournament, royalty luncheon, bridge and canasta party, two separate parades down main street, a grand ball, a fishing derby and a speedboat regatta, to name just a few of the highlights listed in the official program. Perhaps some of the “color” the mayor describes would come from Elvis as he was reported to behave unprofessionally, telling off-color jokes and storming off the stage after just a few songs. This prompted a letter to the Colonel from local promoter Ed Lyon demanding an adjustment to the fee as a result. The Colonel in turn not only provided a $50 refund, but also reprimands Elvis’ manager Bob Neal in a letter in which he expounds that Elvis is “young, inexperienced, and it takes a lot more than a couple of hot records in a certain territory to become a big name artist.” Offered is a copy of the rarely seen official program from that August 1955 carnival in Batesville, Arkansas that contains a picture of Elvis, Scotty and Bill opposite a page with other performers, including Annie Lou and Danny, and Charlie Stewart. A memento of an early period during which Elvis was finding his footing as he rose to stardom. The multi-page black-and-white program measures 11 by 8 3/8 inches (27.94 x 21.27 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The program is in good condition overall with stapled and taped binding that shows signs of age and wear. The covers display minor creases, some residue and a small tear along the right middle edge. Each page is discolored from age and shows slight signs of foxing.
