On January 28, 1956, the fledgling musician made his very first television appearance on the Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show, before being a guest on The Milton Berle show in April, The Steve Allen Show in July, and his famous spot on The Ed Sullivan Show that September. Elvis appeared six times on Stage Show between January 28 and March 24, 1956. Stage Show was a musical variety show, a popular format at the time, hosted by big band leaders Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and produced by Jackie Gleason. The show featured several guest debuts, including Bobby Darin and Elvis Presley, before it was moved to a time slot to compete with Perry Como, at which point ratings declined and the show was cancelled in September of 1956. It was their falling ratings that prompted the brothers to seek out new talent and Elvis Presley was high on the list. Tommy Dorsey found Elvis performing at the Louisiana Hayride and booked him for four show with a pay of $5,000. Harry Kalcheim of the William Morris Agency negotiated the contract with options for two additional appearances. Tommy Dorsey believed that “You see that guy Elvis Presley—he’s going to be one of the biggest names in show business in a short time.” Elvis wore a dark shirt and pants, a white striped jacket and white tie as performed “Shake Rattle and Roll” and “I Got a Woman” with the raw sexuality that created such controversy. The Dorsey brothers’ gamble on Elvis was right and their ratings after his first appearance soared. Offered is a 16mm reel of Elvis’ first appearance on Stage Show on January 28, 1956. While the reel has not been transferred, it contains approximately 10-12 minutes of film with sound. This was truly the jumpstart for Elvis’ career and 1956 would prove pivotal for his ascent to superstardom. This reel, with its historic content and original cover, measures 9 inches (22.86 cm) in diameter and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The reel presents with little distress. NM condition.
